Advantages/Disadvantages

Assassins are the one of the quickest units on the field, used properly they can decimate the enemy. Assassins are very good at sneaking around to the back armour of enemy units getting in that critical strike without fear of being blocked.
Assassins however are fairly weak HP wise and can die in two hits from most combos. They also have an average attack which may not do enough damage at times.

Formation

Assassins are best used to get behind the enemy formations. As such, they are more suited to the flanks of your army for two reasons. One is that they are more likely to be able to go around the units and reach the back armour of those units on the side. Also, defensive wise, travelling along the flank, they can be faced towards the centre so only their front and side armour are vulnerable. Also, less units will be able to target them.
More daring players will use them in the centre, reaching the cleric most of the time in two turns. And with most players bunching knights in the middle, the assassin can also reach the back armour of the knights without them blocking.

Tactics

When attacking with an assassin, always look at the unit you are attacking cool down period. If you can, you can move your assassin two turns in a row if needed to reach the back armour and make sure the unit does not block your assassins attack.
With the assassins multi directional attack, it is best to target as many units as you can. Most of the time it will be two units. Sometimes you have to juggle between attacking 2 units with one back armour and one front armour or two side armour units. It is ussually best to go for the sure attack rather than the riskier one especially if you are down units.
An assassin is good for finishing off units. With their fast movement you can be sure they can deliver that killing blow without the enemy blocking.
Asssassins are generally overlooked and because of their "puny" damage, they tend to be ignored. However, especially without the opponents cleric, assassins can prove to be the turning point in any battle.

Against

Assassins are very easy to kill. A witch/scout combo can kill an assassin as well as many other combos.
Assassins are less susceptible to block from the side than knights so a side shot against an assassin is still a viable alternative to running from one.
Assassins are very susceptible to ranged attacks. Scouts and mages can wear them down very quickly.
With the assassins attack pattern, it is best not to group your units in a way so that the enemies assassin can reach more than target at any one time.
