Advantages/Disadvantages
They can block all forms of physical attack, thus can be only destroyed by spell casters and other Lightning Wards. The Lightning Ward is the most powerful Unit in the whole game. They also block all units that do not have the teleportation ability.
However, they do NOT need to be destroyed to achieve victory. Also, they cannot move, and, they have the second highest recovery time in the game (the first being the cleric).
Also since the Pyromancer and the Dark Magic Witch can both attack units that are 4 spaces away, the lightning ward cannot defend itself against such attacks.
Formation
The Lightning Ward is normally placed near the front of the formation. This is to deter any forms of advancement by the enemy. They can also be placed near your weak units such as spell casters and mud and frost golems.
Tactics
The Lightning ward’s attack is both high powered and unblockable. This means that they can kill most spell casters in one attack (not the Enchantress) and deal high amounts of damage to any units that have high a block % so that other units can finish it off. They are best used in conjunction with other spell casters to deal unblockable damage against enemy units.
They can also be used to block the LOS (Line of Sight) of scouts since scouts cause physical damage.
Against
The best unit for eliminating a Lightning Ward is a Dark Magic Witch. The trick is to use multiple Dark Magic Witches in the following manner. Move one Witch 4 spaces in front of a Lighting Ward and not attack. Wait a turn, and then attack, move back and allow another witch to move into the same position and attack in the same turn, this should bring down the Lightning Ward to 16 hp. Now move a third Witch in front of the Witch that just attacked, and eliminate the Lightning Ward.
Of course there is more than one way to destroy the Lightning ward including a constant bombardment of a Witch and two Pyros one diagonal space in front of her on either side.
Use units with high armor to draw out the Lighting Ward to attack it, and then move yourr spell casters in to deal heavy damage and then retreat back.
